A sentence to pay $235,995 for financial abuse of an elderly person

The Commission welcomes the conclusions of the Tribunal des droits de la personne (Human Rights Tribunal) in a case of exploitation of an elderly person. In this judgment, the Court acknowledges that the victim, an elderly and vulnerable woman, was financially exploited by her nephew. Consequently, the latter is ordered to pay the victim $235,995.18 for material, moral and punitive damages.

Montréal, March 18, 2019 – The Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse welcomes the conclusions of the Tribunal des droits de la personne (Human Rights Tribunal) in a case of exploitation of an elderly person. In this judgment, the Court acknowledges that the victim, an elderly and vulnerable woman, was financially exploited by her nephew. Consequently, the latter is ordered to pay the victim $235,995.18 for material, moral and punitive damages.
