Black History Month: Celebrating the richness of the contribution of Black communities

The Commission invites everyone to participate in the many activities being held all through the month of February to mark Black History Month. The theme of this year’s celebration is inspired by the famous words of South Africa’s anti-apartheid hero and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Nelson Mandela who died in December 2013: "None of us acting alone can achieve success."

Montréal, January 31, 2014 – The Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse invites everyone to participate in the many activities being held all through the month of February to mark Black History Month.

“This is an opportunity to celebrate the richness of the contribution of Black communities to Québec society from February 1st to the 28th,” today said Jacques Frémont, President of the Commission.

The theme of this year’s celebration takes on a particular significance as it is inspired by the famous words of South Africa’s anti-apartheid hero and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Nelson Mandela who died in December 2013: "None of us acting alone can achieve success."

This message of solidarity reminds us the importance of working together to address inequalities affecting society, Mr. Frémont said.

Moreover, a special exhibition entitled “Mandela: A Long Walk To Freedom,” is devoted to the famous leader and is open to the public daily at Montreal’s City hall.
