The Black Coalition of Québec honours the president of the Commission
Montréal, October 20, 2012 – The Black Coalition of Québec awarded its Mathieu Da Costa Prize to Gaétan Cousineau, president of the Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse in recognition of his contribution to the defence of human rights, in particular his work on the issue of racial profiling.
In presenting the award, during a ceremony held in Montréal, the president of the Black Coalition of Québec, Dan Philips, said that the fight against racial profiling, which has been at the heart of the Commission’s work over the past few years, has helped to build a more just society.
Mr. Cousineau thanked the Coalition for the honour and promised to continue pressing the Government to adopt the Commission’s principal recommendations on the issue, including the implementation of a policy against racism and an action plan to prevent and counter racial profiling. He also pointed that it is important to review the present system of police investigating police and to establish an independent, transparent and accountable investigation process that will restore the public’s confidence.
